Everything worth knowing before you book
Latin America offers some of the best value-per-dollar in the world for 3-5 star hotels, especially outside the handful of destinations that see heavy international tourism. A 70% discount here often means the difference between a already-affordable trip and a genuinely remarkable one.
A few things are worth knowing before booking this region specifically.
Unlike Europe or Asia, direct international flights into smaller Latin American cities are less common — many routes connect through major hubs like Bogotá, Mexico City, Panama City, or São Paulo. This isn’t necessarily a downside for pricing (connecting itineraries are sometimes cheaper), but it does mean building in extra time and checking layover length carefully, since some regional connections have longer gaps than travelers expect.
Several Latin American currencies have experienced significant volatility against the US dollar in recent years, which can mean genuinely large effective discounts for travelers paying in stronger currencies, even beyond whatever percentage is advertised. I check the current exchange rate before assuming a listed local price is expensive — it’s often more favorable than it first appears.
This region spans both hemispheres and a huge range of climates, so “rainy season” means very different things in Mexico versus Peru versus Argentina versus Brazil. I always check the specific destination’s weather pattern rather than assuming a general “Latin America dry season,” since the difference between countries can be six months apart.
Hotel location matters more here than in many other regions — some cities have a clear divide between well-established tourist and business districts versus areas better avoided, especially at night. I check recent reviews specifically for comments on neighborhood safety, not just the hotel itself, before booking based on price alone.
Many mid-range and upscale properties in this region offer notably better per-person rates for larger rooms or suites compared to the price scaling seen in North America or Europe. If traveling as a group or family, it’s often worth pricing a larger room against two standard rooms — the larger option is frequently the better deal here specifically.
Because so much of Latin America remains underpriced relative to comparable destinations elsewhere, a genuine 70% off a 4-star property can result in a nightly rate that would be hard to find anywhere else in the world. It’s worth taking the time to verify these deals rather than assuming a number this good must be a mistake.
